I had a project that was shot 4K h264 and was about 1-1.5TB just of that footage. Like anything, it’s all about someone’s workflow. So when the client catches one little thing on the "final", it's not like "aw crap, here we go again", or doing things like sticking the master render on the timeline and cutting so only the revision needs to render.īut - I don't know how big a difference ProRes makes on a PC. In my experience, the biggest benefit of this is final render time - a Premiere proxy project that takes 2 hours to render from native files? It takes like 20 minutes from ProRes. 80% of my stuff I shoot and edit, but I'm getting more and more compositing and footage-repair gigs (like "we changed our logo, can you take it off the guy's polo shirt in these 40 shots and stick our new logo on, and make it look like it's embroidered?", I guess I'm getting a rep for repairs!) So I get a pretty wide gamut of footage types and stuff from different eras, and with Premiere, it's tons of send-to-AE and round tripping. If one has the time to prores-everything (I'll do it when I get back from a gig, offload the cards to EditReady and it may take minutes or hours, depending, or run it over night - ER does run really efficiently in the background so you can do other work while it's cranking away). This is more important if your edit requires things like compositing, masking, or roto work - you're going to be switching the proxy view off an awful lot, and if you're working with R3D or other render-intensive footage, that's a pain, and then your final renders take forever.
